NAHARALAGUN, Jun 17: Reacting to the box item of this daily – ‘Where is Polio drop?’ – published in June 17th edition of this daily, the officers of directorate of health clarified that the Pulse Polio Day on 16th June’ was meant for UP, Bihar, Delhi, Chandigarh and selected areas of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
However, pulse polio immunization (PPI) under the flagship programme of the GoI is conducted in Arunachal Pradesh twice in a year on January 20 and February 24.
Without cross checking the facts from the authority, such misgiving on the basis of complaints received from confused public should not be entertained by media having a greater social responsibility, the officers rued.
Besides the PPI programme, the department in collaboration with the WHO has expanded to other areas to completely eradicate the sources of polio, the officers informed.
Though Arunachal State Hospital also reacted, but the news clearly mentioned that the ASH authority had clarified through SMS: “There was no direction to set up polio booths”.
The write up was basically a follow up of a news item under headline – ‘Arunachal may not catch up with MCC’ – ‘Chopper essential: Director’, published on 07.03.12, questioning the WHO’s move to de-list India from its polio vulnerable list on 24.02.12.
