Police said a major fire broke out in a slum on Kishrod Vidyavinod Avenue in Kolkata’s Baghbazar area under the Shiyambukur police station on Wednesday evening. At least 25 fire tenders were put under service. According to sources, four people were injured and several huts were destroyed. No casualties were reported as most people were evacuated quickly with the help of locals. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, police said.
“At around 18.55 pm, a fire broke out at Hazari Bus Stand near Baghbazar Women’s College (Shiambukur BS area). Ten (10) fire tenders were working at the spot,” a senior police official said. According to the police, the OCs of the nearby police stations and the available Force / Divisional Police Control Room van / Heavy Radio Flying Forces-I & II / Karma Ambulance / Divisional Ambulances are at the spot.
The slum is located near the Baghbazar Women’s College near the Chittagong Lock Gate. Sources said that a part of ‘Sharda Mayor Barry’ was also affected by the fire. A series of cylinder explosions were heard in the area and police suspect these may have been connected to gas cylinders in the burning houses. Sources said the windows of nearby buildings were also damaged by the fire.
Some locals blamed fire tenders for the delay in reaching the site. They blocked the road and reportedly hit some police vehicles. A large police team was stationed in the area to control the angry mob.
