Greek police on Thursday (July 1) announced the arrest of the new Nazi Golden Dawn party’s number two, Christos Papas, after serving more than 13 years in prison in October. About fifty members of the Golden Dawn were sentenced after a five-and-a-half-year marathon trial in Athens. They formed a criminal organization that carried out murders and illegally possessed weapons.

The man, who is considered one of Golden Tone’s key ideologues, will be arraigned on Friday, police said in a statement. He was a fan of Benito Mussolini, the founder of the fascist regime in Italy, the former owner of a furniture store that helped Georgios Papadopoulos establish the dictatorship in Greece in 1967.

Greek MEP Ionis Lagos, who served 13 years and eight months in prison, was the last of the Golden Dawn staff to escape justice again. “Leadership of a criminal organization”, Handed over from Greece to Greece on May 15.

Created in the 1990s, Golden Dawn has long suffered impunity despite at least two murders and numerous acts of violence against immigrants, LGBT + people and left-wing activists. It lost the last 2019 assembly elections and when its leaders condemned it last October it exploded and lost its majority of voters.
