ANI reports that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Amazon Prime Video officials in India over the controversy surrounding the recently released web series ‘Thandav’.
Several BJP leaders have called for a ban on the new series, accusing its producers and actors of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus. They also called the show “anti-Dalit”.
In Maharashtra, BJP MLA Ram Kadam on Sunday lodged a complaint against the web series makers at the Ghatkopar police station in Mumbai. He also wrote a letter to Union I&P Minister Prakash Javadekar seeking a ban on ‘Thandav’.
“Strict action should be taken against the actor, director and producer of the web series,” Kadam said, adding that the dance form was named Tantav, which is particularly associated with Siva.
Kadam took to Twitter to demand the removal of a section that says “he is making fun of Siva” and apologizes to actor Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub.
“Tantava will be ignored until the necessary changes are made. #PontandNow,” he tweeted.
“Similar to the censorship system for reviewing films and serials, similar arrangements should be made for reviewing series on the OTT platform. Writing to Rak Prakash Javdekar Ji,” he added in Hindi.
Other party ministers have called for a boycott and urged Prakash Javadekar to regulate the OTT site.
Manoj Kodak, a Member of Parliament from Maharashtra, condemned the web series, saying “OTT content should be restricted for the sake of India’s unity”.
“OTT platforms with complete freedom from censorship have led to repeated attacks on Hindu sentiments. I strongly condemn this (sic),” he wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
Pandey leader Kapil Mishra accused Thandav of being “anti-Dalit and full of communal hatred against Hindus”. He asked people on Twitter to write a letter to Javadekar urging him to ban the web series.
‘Thandav’ starring actors Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover, Dikmanshu Tulia, Dino Morea, Kumud Misra, Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub, Kauhar Khan and Krithika Kamra was screened on Friday streaming stage.
